Local football referees will kick off their 2011 programme of activities with a Fitness Run tomorrow at Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary starting at 06:00 hours.
Referees from Georgetown, Linden, Berbice, West Demerara, Bartica and East Coast Demerara will take part in the programme geared preparing
the referees for local and international competition, Secretary of the Guyana Football Referees Council (GFRC), Troy Peters said.
The Fitness Run will be coordinated by Local football Fitness Instructor Lindley Langhorne, and instructors Lawrence “Sparrow” Griffith and Roy McArthur.
“2011 will be another busy year for local referees so the Council is putting systems in place to ensure that they are fit and meet all requirements as laid out by FIFA, Peters said.
Peters added that a comprehensive programme was being rolled out by the GFRC in an effort to attract persons interested in officiating in football.
The Council is in the process of finalizing a Symposium on the Laws of the game and the target group will be managers, coaches and captains of teams affiliated to the Georgetown Football Association.
Similar programmes will also be held in other sub-associations during this season.
The GFRC will collaborate with the Scotia/Pepsi Schools Football Academy to run off a three-day referees training programme from March 24-26 at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue for students identified to officiate in the upcoming football tournament.
There will also be Beginners training exercises around the country during this year in addition to refresher courses for referee.
Meanwhile, four local officials were named to officiate in upcoming international tournaments.
FIFA referee Roland Persaud was named as fourth official for the Guyana leg of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Champions Cup from March 12-14 in Georgetown.
FIFA referee Stanley Lancaster and FIFA assistant referees Venton Mars and Cedric Weeks will travel to Castries from March 12-14 for the St. Lucia leg of the Champions Cup, while FIFA assistant referee Dion Inniss has been named as a reserve for the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 championships from March 28- April 10 in Guatemala.
