It has been talked about for months and pushed back from a previous date, but finally the show dubbed ‘Theatrical Spectacular’ is set to come off next month.
Sonia Noel is one of the well-known faces behind the project and she disclosed in a recent interview that the planning “is underway and there is no slowing down”.
Sonia said that fashion drives the production which she summed up in a few words as, “a vision of fashion, dance, music and drama”. She explained that the fantasy lies in the fashion and according to her; this new production is a collective effort.
Theatrical Spectacular mirrors Guyana Fashion Weekend, she said, in that the vision is a combined dream of a group of individuals who are putting their ideas together and working towards a common goal.
The show is set for the National Cultural Centre on April 8 and 9 and the designers involved in the production have been asked to interpret fashion trends from the 60s to present. Sonia mentioned that the 60s was chosen to pay homage to fashion icon Lady Sara Lou Carter, who was the wife Guyana’s ambassador to the US during the 60s, the late Sir John Carter, and was known for her chic sense of style.
Sonia said this of Sara Lou Carter: “Her fashion sense during that era was so classic chic and we simply want to capture that time. We couldn’t find a more fitting woman to pay tribute to than her.”
Theatrical Spectacular will officially kick off the scheduled events for GFW 2011 and Sonia pitched it as “a must-see event”. She said that emphasis would be on this country’s rich and diverse fashion culture and the developing sectors of designing and modelling.
The event is being marketed as a red carpet affair. The cast for the show has already been chosen following two rounds of auditions, but no announcements have been made with respect to who made the cut.
Sonia told The Scene that there was an overwhelming response to the show and the team was forced to hold a second round of auditions. “People wanted to be involved and we said why not,” she added.
She added that tickets are on sale at the NCC; Kings Jewellery World; Nigel’s Supermarket and Silhouette at Barr Street, Kitty.
