Artist Josefa Tamayo’s exhibition of sculptures, paintings and drawings, a collection entitled ‘Tropical Impressions’ is currently on show at the National Gallery, Castellani House.
According to a press release from the National Gallery, Tropical Impressions is part of the Mashramani 2011 celebrations. The exhibition opened to the public on February 17 and will run until March 19.
Tropical Impressions includes sculpture in wood, copper and mixed media, paintings in acrylic and watercolour, and drawings, which reflect the scope of talent of Tamayo.
Inspired by the flora, fertile lands and animal life of Guyana, the artist declared that she did not want to miss recording and celebrating everyday scenes and traditions– things many people take for granted.
Cuban –born but a naturalized Guyanese, Tamayo’s collection represents an appreciation of Guyanese life and society, where she has made a contribution for over 25 years as a tutor in sculpture, design and drawing at the Burrowes School of Art, and influenced students and other artists with her technically accomplished and imaginative works, the gallery said.
Gallery hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, and 2 to 6 pm on Saturdays. Admission is free. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays.
