Pele Football Club, spearheaded by a double from Travis `Zorro’ Grant whipped Seawall United 5-1 while Riddim Squad edged Den Amstel 3-2 Friday night at the Georgetown Football Club as the Mayor’s Cup Invitational knockout tournament got underway.
Grant scored in the 21st and 29th minutes while national player Marvin Joseph added a third goal in the 31st minute.
Pele’s remaining two goals were both score4d by youth national players Sheldon Holder who netted in the 56th minute and Daniel Wilson who score in the 67th minute.
Seawall FC gained a consolation goal from in the 69th minute.
In the opening encounter Den Amstel took a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Adrian Hector in the 13th minute and Vernon Griffith who netted in the 18th minute.Seon Hope pulled one back scoring in the 23rd minute as den Amstel took a 2-1 lead at lemon time.
However, the wheels came off the Den Amstel attack after they were reduced to 10 men when a player was sent off and Amos Ramsay in the 52nd minute and Mark Gittens in the 57th scored to give their team a hard fought win.
The competition continues today at the same venue this evening.
From 6pm the Guyana Defence Force, winners of last June’s Mayor’s Cup will tackle Monedderlust and Conquerors will oppose New Amsterdam United in the feature clash at 8pm.
The GDF team will be spearheaded by midfielders Shawn Arthur and Shevanne Seaforth while Delroy Deen and Peter Parks will lead the strikers.
Sheik Kamal and Royan Morrison will marshall the defence.
