President Bharrat Jagdeo committed to providing a more convenient area for vendors occupying the One Mile, Wisroc area after they asked him to intervene following a 14-day notice to remove from the Region 10 town council.
The vendors met with Jagdeo on Wednesday at the Office of the President, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. The release said the notice was served on the vendors based on the belief that plying their trade at the said location would hinder plans to expand the road through the area to facilitate traffic from Brazil. The president advised the vendors to halt plans to extend their stalls and assured them that he will be looking at the construction of a mall where they will be relocated.
About 100 stallholders occupy the area. Many of whom had vended there for 10 to 15 years, GINA said.
Minister of Public Service Dr Jennifer Westford, Minister of Transport Robeson Benn and Presidential Advisor on Community Development Odinga Lumumba also attended the meeting.
