Two teachers are among three persons charged separately with assault following a fracas during the New Amsterdam Mashramani celebrations on Sunday last.
Private school teacher Simone Ramsammy was among the viewers who lined Main Street to catch a glimpse of the floats and revellers as they danced through the thoroughfare of the township when she observed an old rival speaking to her husband. She then crossed the street and allegedly dealt Stacia James several cuffs and slaps about her body.
James of New Street, New Amsterdam was initially taken by surprise but later retaliated and allegedly inflicted several blows to the Fraser Academy’s teacher.
During the fight, Ramsammy called out to her brother Kirk Fraser, a Berbice Educational Institute teacher who rushed to his younger sister’s assistance and allegedly dealt James several cuffs and kicks about her body. James was subsequently examined by a medical practitioner who submitted a medical certificate.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo ordered that Ramsammy and James be sent on their own recognizance but Fraser had to post bail in the sum of $10,000.
The trio is expected to return to the New Amsterdam Court on May 13 for report.
