Former Chairman of the National Sports Commission Conrad Plummer Saturday night urged the winners of awards at the fourth annual Berbice Cricket Board awards ceremony to follow in the footsteps of past great Berbician cricketers.
Plummer was at the time delivering the feature address at the ceremony which was well attended by dignitaries from the area along with members of other cricket boards and associations.
Among the distinguished guests at the ceremony was the Mayor of New Amsterdam Claude Henry, Region Six Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, Bissondyal Singh, GCA President, Roger Harper, BCB President, Keith Foster and other cricket executives and officials.
Plummer congratulated the awardees for their achievements while urging them to motivate and inspire others.
“Let your reward remind you that others have considered you worthy of this accolade and as you move forward, nothing should distract you,” he said.
“This award is not the end, but only the beginning of more to come. Tonight, you are the best that Berbice has to offer but tomorrow, training should begin again,” he charged.
Plummer acknowledged the BCB for affording him the opportunity to speak to the upcoming cricket stars and also reflected on the past cricketing legends that hailed from the county of Berbice.
He urged the young awardees to follow in the footsteps of the previous greats and lauded the BCB for the strides they have made in developing the sport at the county level, which, he said, reflected also at the national level.
“The winds of change are blowing all around us, we can be in danger of being left behind… so the BCB needs to be congratulated for the innovative programmes they have instituted,” said Plummer, a former bank chairman.
Plummer, while reflecting on some of the developmental programmes instituted by the BCB such as mentoring and educational programmes, declared:“Cricket skills without the necessary brain no longer constitutes in today’s world… the programmes scream loud and clear that the board recognises the challenges and changes that are facing athletes today,” he added.
