All women and girls must have equal access to education and training, and particular focus must be placed in the areas of science and technology, as this is the age of the science and technology revolution.
So said Deborah Shortt-Parker of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) in a statement to mark International Women’s Day today.
Shortt-Parker, who is the Chairperson of Women’s Advisory Committee within the GTU, stated that we must recognize the many challenges faced by women, and the countless hurdles to be overcome. “We feel that everyone should join our bandwagon to promote our girls in their quest to be involved in science and technology. This will certainly aid in the acquisition of jobs in the future,” she added.
The release calls on the government and all educational institutions to ensure that our girls and women everywhere in Guyana are given equal opportunity to decent work and play as they obtain a good education.
“Long live all the hardworking and enterprising girls and women of Guyana and of the world, and may God bless us all!” she said, and she saluted girls and women in Guyana, especially women teachers.
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year and the theme this year is ‘Equal access to Education, Training and Science and Technology; Pathway to Decent Work for Women’.
