A man was handed an 18-month prison sentence yesterday by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a simple larceny charge.
The charge against Asif Mohamed is that on March 2 in Georgetown he stole one electrical saw and a drill valued at $70,000, property of Michelle Dutchin. The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
According to the prosecution’s facts, the defendant is known to the virtual complainant (VC), for whom he does odd jobs.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar related that on the day in question the VC asked the defendant to remove a tape from her home, as it was not working. The accused told the VC that he would return to execute the job, but he never did. The court heard that the VC later made checks around her premises and noticed that the items mentioned were missing. A police report was subsequently made, and after investigations were conducted, the defendant was arrested and charged. The articles were not recovered.
After hearing the facts, the magistrate then sentenced Mohamed to eighteen months’ imprisonment.
