A man who admitted a battery of charges including larceny of cash and gold, break-and-enter and larceny and escaping lawful custody was yesterday remanded to prison as a probation report was ordered prior to sentencing.
When Mohamed Ali appeared before the George-town Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to nine charges when they were read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The charges stated that on January 26 at Georgetown, by false pretence, and with intent to defraud, Ali obtained from Ram Suknandan 50.5 pennyweights of gold valued $378,750 by falsely pretending that he was in a position to pay for same knowing it to be false.
On the same day also, Ali stole 50.5 pennyweights of gold valued $378,750, property of Orin Agard.
On February 3 and 25 at Georgetown, Ali stole from Anthony Stanton and Agard respectively 50 pennyweights of gold valued $550,000. The defendant accepted also that on February 7 he stole $660,000 belonging to Khemraj Ramdeo.
Ali pleaded guilty to the charge which said that between November 1 and 2, 2010 at Georgetown, he stole a quantity of US and Guyana currency valued $3.2 million, also the property of Ramdeo.
When the charges were read to him, the defendant also said that while being in custody of Police Constable 20426 Rodney, pending charges of simple larceny, he escaped.
He accepted too that on January 1 at Anna Regina, pending a charge of break and enter and larceny, he escaped from the Anna Regina Police Station.
Finally, Ali admitted that between August 28 and 29, 2010 at Essequibo, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Quang Young and stole a quantity of jewellery and a quantity of US and Guyana dollars all valuing $4.3 million.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that the “facts were as charged” after which no further details of what transpired on the various days were given.
The man’s attorney, Gregory Gaskin made a plea for leniency in passing judgment. The lawyer said that his client did not intend to waste the court’s time and had accepted the charges. He requested too that Ali be mentally evaluated.
As he begged for lenience, the defendant said that he would appreciate a psychiatric evaluation if granted by the court.
In addition to the evaluation, the magistrate ordered that a probation report be prepared before sentencing for March 28. A heavily shackled Ali was subsequently remanded to prison.
