Injury to jockey Paul Delph marred the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club/Lions Club of Corriverton one-day horse race meet at the Alness Race Track, Corentyne, Berbice on Sunday.
It is understood that Delph was mounted on Clear Victory, when the animal bolted, resulting in the jockey falling and breaking his left leg. He was rushed to hospital shortly after.
Apart from that Dubai Duchess of the Sheriff West Coast Berbice stable won the feature E and G class events while Royal Salute of the Asif Baksh and Fazal Habibulla stable had wins in the co-feature Three-year-old and I-3 races. The other horse that turned in good performances was Romeo with victories in the J&K class race and the L class event. The three horses came out as joint champions.
Halfway through the E class race it was still an equally poised race. However, by the far turn Peaceful of the Elcock Stable, ridden by Jamaican Andron Findlay, took the lead until Colin Ross, riding Dubai Duchess, mounted an attack, leaving the other horses in its wake.
The Bailiff, ridden by Yap Drepaul, came in second as Peaceful held on for third ahead of Delmur Gold in the 1400m event. The race was sponsored by Ansa Mc Al Trading and the first prize was $250,000 and a trophy.
Dubai Duchess had earlier run a tactical race in the G class 1100m event to take away $180,000 first prize and the Chico Chester trophy. Bob’s Fortune, Pegasus Rising and the Gap occupied second, third and fourth respectively.
Royal Salute of the Baksh Stable and ridden by Yap Drepaul took the co-feature three-year-old 1100m and $180,000 and the Shawn Asrafali trophy. J.D Junior, Natural Mystic and Cash Connection rounded out the money.
Royal Salute then returned to top the field in the I-3 and Lower race. The horse won $100,000 and the V. Power Gas Station trophy. Nordan Junior, Pinky and J.D. Junior finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Celebration Time of the Elcock Stable was in winners’ row with victory in the H class 1400m event. The animal, having fully recovered from surgery, came from behind to beat Prospectors’ Pride, Dream Girl and Royal Champion. The win was worth $140,000 along with the Fazal Habibulla trophy.
In the first race of the day Savion of the Crawford Stable won ahead of stable mate Mona Lisa, Diplomat and Extra Heat for the $110,000 first prize and the Hookumchand trophy.
Romeo of the Carlos Baker Mahaicony Stable had a good day when he won the J&K 1300m race and $90,000 and the Ansa Mc Al trophy ahead of Bounty Flyer, Indian Boy and Natural Black. The animal then returned in the L class to win the $70,000 top purse and trophy ahead of Justin Royal Intention and Gray Prospect.
Meanwhile, Ross, who recently returned from overseas, took the top jockey honours while Habibulla was adjudged the top trainer. They both received trophies, compliments of the Trophy Stall and the RCMTF&SF.
Over 68 horses participated in the day’s proceedings which had prize monies totaling over $3M.
