A 49-year-old man accused of shooting at two women after being referred to by the call name ‘Deportee’, was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation against Trevor Fernandes is that on March 6 at Georgetown, he discharged a loaded firearm at Onecia Henry and Clair Da Silva with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm to the said women.
The mechanic who resides at 78 First Street, Alberttown was not required to plead to the indictable charge of discharging a loaded firearm when it was read to him after being arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
In presenting the facts of the case, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, the accused was visiting a friend who is a licensed firearm holder living in the Alberttown area also.
According to Telford, the accused was deported from the United States sometime back and was known by the name ‘Deportee’.
Telford said that moments before the shooting incident, Fernandes heard the name ‘Deportee’ shouted and retaliated by using the gun belonging to the friend he was visiting at the time to shoot at the women.
The prosecutor related to the court that the complainants managed to escape unhurt. The police were later summoned to the scene and conducted investigations after which the accused was arrested and charged.
The prosecution had no objection to the accused being admitted to bail but requested that it be granted in a substantial sum to ensure that he returns to court.
After listening to the particulars of the case, however, the acting chief magistrate informed the unrepresented Fernandes that he would be denied his pre-trial liberty. He has to return to court on March 28.
