Septic tank forces relocation of classes from Mibicuri School

Parents of the Mibicuri School are threatening protest action as an overflowing septic tank and a flooded playfield have created a horrid stench that has forced teachers to relocate classes from the building.

The school, which is located in Black Bush Polder, houses nursery, primary and secondary levels. And, according to a concerned parent, it has been nearly three weeks since the stench forced students and teachers out of the building.

The woman said that about a week ago the septic tank overflowed into parts of the school yard and maggots have started to take over that area. Recent rains, she pointed out, had flooded the playfield and fish spawned there.

However, she said earlier this week someone apparently poisoned the fish. The woman noted that the smell of the overflowing septic tank and the dead fish is unbearable. “For two weeks now this place deh like this and some children ain’t coming to school. They get vomiting and diarrhoea,” she added.

This newspaper tried to make contact with the Region Six Regional Education Officer but she was said to be out of office for the rest of the day while all other officers were out in the field.

Yesterday morning, the woman said, some parents took the media to observe the conditions in which their children learn. The mother said she was concerned and expressed hope for the situation to be promptly addressed, since her daughter is in Grade Six and examinations are drawing near.

Currently, students have to be walking all over the street going to a church and a mosque for classes, the parent said.  “The Region came in last week to interview and they throw lil sand on the field. They does only come when nobody deh,” she added.
