UNESCO presented several pieces of office equipment valued US$4,200 to the Council for Technical Vocational and Education and Training (TVET) on Thursday to enhance its activities.
UNESCO Secretary-General Inge Nathoo told an audience at the brief presentation ceremony hosted at the UNESCO Secretariat that the TVET Council, upon joining the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training network, qualified for the grant which is to provide computers and electronic equipment. TVET joined the network last year, and in September it was recognised as the most recent UNEVOC Centre, a press release from the Ministry of Education said.
The equipment includes two desktop computers with workstations, one laptop computer and one projector. It is expected to be used to establish, develop and monitor schemes for the training of craftsmen, technicians and engineers. The Council for TVET which was established as a consequence of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act of 2004 is being further developed and strengthened so that it is fully staffed and equipped to discharge all its functions. To this end, the equipment donated to its offices is expected to complement its programmes and enhance its training capability in the delivery workshops and other training activities.
The ministry said at the 2009 General Conference of UNESCO, a decision was taken to refocus on TVET and skills development for the world of work, within the framework of lifelong learning. To promote this main line of action, the release said, UNESCO, through its UNEVOC Network in Technical Vocational Education and Training established UNEVOC Centres.
