Firemen defeat CPOYC in 20/20 return softball clash

The Guyana Fire Service, led by an unbeaten century from Keith Fraser, defeated Central Police Operational Youth Club (CPOYC) to gain revenge in the feature 20/20 return softball clash at the Scott Church ground, New Amsterdam, Berbice, last Saturday.

Fraser scored 134, which contained 10 sixes and 11 fours as he put together 92 for the fifth wicket in 12 overs with Gilead Hope. Their team was precariously poised at 22-4 in the third over at one stage in reply to the CPOYC’s 177 all out in 19.3 overs.

Fraser brought up his century with a six and won the game with a reverse sweep that rocketed into the mid wicket boundary. The team ended on 181-6 from 18.3 overs. Hope made 27 (2×4) while Charles Quintyn was the next best scorer with 12.  Bowling for CPOYC Chrisendat Dhanua took 3-37 and Shurat supported with 2-39.

Earlier, CPOYC had a steady start before Romel Dugar topscored with 82  aide by seven sixes and three fours.
He received support from Dhanua (30), Anil Shurat (18) and Oniel Sulkar (16).

Kwesi Mentore receives the winning trophy from Imran Saccoor.

Bowling for the GFS the chief wicket takers were Kevon Edwards (4-22), Captain Kwesi Mentore (3-20) and Steffon Adams (2-31).
At the presentation ceremony the firemen were presented with $30,000 while the CPOYC received $10,000, compliments of Republic Bank Manager Imran Saccoor and the Naz Internet Cafe trophy.

Fraser received the lion’s share of the individual awards with the Man of the Match, Best Batsman, Highest Scorer and Most Sixes awards. The Best Bowler was fireman Edwards. Akbar Khan of the CPOYC managed to scrape the Best Fielder award.
CPOYC won the first meeting last year which was played for the Republic Bank trophy.

According to organizer Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan the main aim of the match was to launch a Sport Initiative Programme organized by the Police Force in Berbice to keep youths away from indulging in criminal activities and to become better citizens for the nation.

Saccoor expressed the institution’s pleasure to be associated with the event and presented the winning NATI Trophy to captain of the GFS team  Mentore.
