Organiser of the Biennial Hugh Ross Classic (HRC) bodybuilding competition, Hugh Ross disclosed to Stabroek Sport recently that he plans to stage another HRC this year on May 29, but the date proposed has to be sanctioned by the Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GABBFF).
Ross had revealed to this newspaper last year, following the successful staging of the second edition of the HRC last June, that he was contemplating making the event an annual one.
The annual hosting of the HRC is close to becoming a reality, but according to Ross he is not getting the date proposed for the hosting of the event authorized by the GABBFF.
The 2010 Sportsman of the Year spoke to Stabroek Sport while in Guyana to receive his national award when he also delivered the response on behalf of the recipients at the National Sports Commission Awards ceremony Friday at the National Cultural Centre.
Ross related his intentions to make the event annual when asked if he would stage an HRC this year based on previous comments and the success of last year’s HRC.
“I came last year and hosted our event, the Hugh Ross Classic and all of our key sponsors as well as even the sports ministry have asked this question [Will the HRC be held this year?]” said Ross.
“Not only have they asked, but they also put forth a mandate requesting we host one this year,” Ross added.
Ross further noted that he and his organizing team are willing and prepared to stage the event this year at the proposed date.
However Ross related that “at this point, the Guyana Amateur Body Building Federation has not seen it fit to facilitate us with a sanction for the date that we would like to have this event held.”.
Ross pinpointed that the GABBFF had unofficially said that this year’s HRC could’ve been held on May 29, but subsequently stated that they could not sanction the event for that date, “so now everything is currently on hold.”
Ross said that his return to Guyana is dependent on whether the event is authorized for the date identified.
“That [his return to Guyana] is dependent on the body building federation, who has not yet sanctioned the May 29 event. If that event is sanctioned for May 29 then obviously I’ll have to be here for the event. In the absence of that I’ll have to reschedule my plans as is necessary.”
