CARICOM has joined with St Lucia in mourning the passing of the island’s former Prime Minister Sir Allan Fitzgerald Louisy, while lauding him as a true visionary and regionalist.
In a press release, acting Secretary-General Lolita Applewhaite said Sir Allan was a “true visionary who fully embraced his role as leader of the newly independent Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia as well as his role as a regionalist.” In remembering his contribution to St Lucia, Applewhaite noted Sir Allan’s role in the establishment of the National Commercial Bank and the Saint Lucia Development Bank, in addition to the introduction of measurers to make healthcare more accessible to all. She also noted his involvement in the development of CARICOM through his tenure as judge of the Eastern Caribbean Court.
“Sir Allan led an exemplary life defined by his commitment to excellence, his sense of community and love of his people, his humility and his indefatigable dedication to his country and to this region,” Applewhaite said, while noting that Caribbean Community sympathises with his family and the government and people of St Lucia on his death.
