The steering committee of the Berbice Table Tennis Sub-Association continues its efforts to promote table tennis in the area with a two-day tournament for school children and those attending tertiary institutions in Berbice.
The two-day tournament is slated for March 25 and 26 at the Berbice High School auditorium and is open to all students in Berbice.
The tournament will be played in five boys and girls categories – Under-10, Under-13, Under-15, Under-18 and Open.
The competition is expected to see players from primary and secondary schools both private and public as well as the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, Upper Corentyne Technical Institute, Port Mourant Training Centre and the University of Guyana Berbice campus.
Trophies and other incentives will be available for the top three players and other outstanding performers in the respective categories.
The competition will be sponsored by the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture.
Meanwhile, the steering committee has also organized a number of coaching sessions at various venues on Saturday, March 19 to help get players in shape for the upcoming tournament.
Sessions are expected to be held at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School, Berbice High School, Rose Hall Community Centre in Canje, Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC), University of Guyana Berbice Campus, and Skeldon Community Centre.
Among those scheduled to conduct the sessions are Berbice-based coaches Floyd Conway, Gibran Hussein, Desiree Lancaster, school teachers Jermaine Glasgow and Cordell Austin while coaches Linden Johnson and Ray Anderson are also expected for particular sessions.
Racquets, balls and other necessities are expected to be provided by the GTTA and a number of tables recently donated to various areas in Berbice including the NAMS, BHS and J.C Chandisingh schools, PMTC, and Rose Hall Community Centre will be available for the training.
