The 2011 rugby season will kick off this Sunday at the National Park Rugby Ground when the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) stages its traditional Banks DIH Sevens Tournament commencing with an opening ceremony at 10:30 hrs.
According to a GRFU release yesterday, Sports Minister Frank Anthony has been invited to take the salute at the March Past of teams and to deliver the feature remarks at the opening of the tournament.
The tournament will feature male and female Seven-a-Side games for the Banks DIH Trophy between Yamaha Caribs, the Guyana Defence Force and the Pepsi Hornets.
Pepsi Hornets are the current holders of the Men’s Trophy and Yamaha Caribs are the Women’s Trophy holders.
According to the release the competing teams should assemble at 10:30 hrs for the march past of teams, which will begin at 11:00 hrs.
GRFU’s Match Secretary, Col. John Lewis has been appointed Match Commissioner of the tournament. Kick-off for the first game will take place at 12:00 hrs.
Meanwhile the presentation of trophies will be done by a representative of Banks DIH at the conclusion of the final game at approximately 17:00 hours.
