A packed day of schools’ basketball is scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall today as eight tournament games and free throw shootout competitions get the ball rolling on the inaugural YBG Challenge Series from 13:00 hours.
The Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Series will be contested throughout this weekend and conclude Sunday.
Today’s series of games will see teams contesting in both the Under-16 and Under-19 categories as well as the free throw pairs shootout competition.
A number of schools basketball rivals are scheduled to bump heads from as early as the first round of the competition today. As runners-up of the recently concluded Saints Stanislaus College Mashramani tournament, President’s College (PC) will be challenging Marian Academy in one of the most anticipated contests of the day.
PC had defeated Marian Academy in the semi-finals of the Mashramani tournament and today’s rematch is expected to be a crowd pleaser.
Another first round match that is expected to be exciting will be the contest between Saints and Plaisance which is also a rematch of the other semifinal in the Saints tournament. Today’s Saints/Plaisance rematch is scheduled to begin at 17:00hrs.
Newcomer to the competitive schools basketball arena, Glory Lights Secondary will also be on show today looking to make a strong debut against Charlestown Secondary.
In other games slated for today, Marian Academy will oppose New Campbellville Secondary in the Series’ opening encounter, followed by a matchup between Cummings Lodge Secondary and Saint Stanislaus College, while School of the Nations will go up against Guyana Education Trust College.
Queen’s College is also carded to oppose St Roses High, while in the feature game of the day, Government Technical Institute will take centre court against the University of Guyana in an Under-19 matchup.
