The Guyana Relief Council (GRC) on Thursday made presentations to three families who were the victims of recent disasters that damaged their homes.
Donations were made at the GRC headquarters to Gaitree Doodnauth, 59, who lost her 597 Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown home, as a result of a fire on February 9. Doodnauth was presented with a cheque of $50,000 and was given a package consisting of food items, kitchen utensils and a mattress prior to the monetary donation.
Doodnauth’s neighbour, Perella Waithe, also received compensation for damage to her home as a result of the fire caused at Doodnauth’s residence.
She received pipes and fittings to rebuild her guttering. Waithe related that her windows were also shattered but she was able to replace them on her own.
Jules Joseph, a teacher from a family of four of Quarrie Village, Rupununi, lost his home to fire on February 10. The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs will arrange transportation for his package to be taken to Rupununi.
Stabroek News understands that Marva Smith of Conservancy Dam Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara; Basil Mansook of 6 Covent Garden, Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara; Francina Valentina of 3 Belmonte, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara; Sharda Hiraman of 48 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara and Chan Kumar Fagoo of 48 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara were all scheduled to receive donations as well they were not present.
Families who were affected by the Grove fire also received packages on March 5, 7 and 8. Yvonne Ramkishan, from a family of 4 of 51 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara and Cecil Puran, from a family of 13 of 50 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara received donations from the GRC.
Savitree Ramdeen, whose 22 Hill Street, Albouystown, Georgetown home collapsed on March 1, was also given a mattress.
