Minister discusses livestock, cash crops in Region 10

Minister of Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud told Kwakwani farmers that government is taking steps to help them to expand and develop the agriculture sectors in Region Ten in order to boost their livelihoods.

During the meeting on March 5 which was held at the Workers’ Club, Persaud pointed out that Region Ten communities are unique and would require continued special attention. According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release he said, “We believe that remote hinterland/riverain communities such as yours deserve and, must get special and differential attention. It is about developing appropriate development interventions to suit the unique situation of communities.”

The minister told the meeting that the administration has been insisting that there be continued development opportunities and the 2011 National Budget was crafted with this in mind.

As such, focus is being placed on expanding agriculture and forestry within the area as the Intermediate Savannahs are believed to have the potential to move the agro-industrial base forward. He noted too that recently a team visited the area to identify ways to further develop livestock and crops on a large scale.
