The West Indies Cricket Board this afternoon said that Trinidad and Tobago batsman Runako Morton and Leeward Islands all rounder Tonito Willett are expected to take no further part in the WICB Regional 4 Day Round 5 match at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain following their arrest by police.
The WICB release issued from St John’s Antigua did not say why the two were in police custody.
“The duo was taken into police custody sometime between the end of the first day’s play and the start of the second day’s play of the Trinidad and Tobago v Leeward Islands match. They remain in police custody”, the release said.
It added: “The WICB will make no further comment on this matter at this time.”
Morton has had a series of discipline problems since become a West Indian player. This is what cricket commentator Tony Cozier had to say in May 2009 when discussing selections for the West Indies tour of England.
“Why Runako Morton is here is another (puzzle). His long record of indiscipline stretches back to his expulsion from the now defunct academy eight years ago through myths about deceased grandmothers to his most recent episode of violence that led to his suspension by the Leewards for fighting with a team mate last season. His days as an international cricketer were at an end in any case. To recall him now, as a late replacement for the injured Dale Richards, perpetuates the modern impression in West Indies cricket that discipline doesn’t matter.”
Willett has also had some issues with West Indian cricket. Willett was widely reported as having failed a drugs test at a Stanford 20/20 camp in 2008.
