SPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, CMC – Opener Omar Phillips stroked an enterprising half-century to brighten an otherwise dour outing, as weather ruined the opening day of the fifth round Regional First Class Championship match between Jamaica and Combined Campuses and Colleges here yesterday.
A damp outfield at Chedwin Park, resulting from heavy overnight rain, ruined play before lunch but CCC prospered after lunch when Jamaica won the toss and opted to field first.
Phillips, who played two Tests for West Indies two years ago, was unbeaten on 53 as CCC cruised to 90 without loss. However, rain returned an hour after tea to end play for the day.He was partnered by Romel Currency on 27 when the players were forced from the field.
The left-handed Phillips has so far stroked eight fours and raised his half-century off 108 balls in 141 minutes at the crease.
Currency, meanwhile, has so far faced 108 balls and counted two fours.
CCC are fourth in the standings on 27 points while title-holders Jamaica lead the championship with 36 points.
