Regional cricketers Runako Morton and Tonito Willett were both charged for possession of marijuana on Friday night by Morvant police.
This was revealed by manager of the Trinidad and Tobago cricket team Omar Khan yesterday. Morton was representing Trinidad and Tobago and Willett was representing the Leeward Islands in their regional First Class clash at the Queen’s Park Oval. Both players were noticeably absent from yesterday’s play, as they were being detained at the Morvant Police Station.
Khan said Morton had abandoned the team and is now on his own. “The team has a curfew of 11.30pm and Morton broke curfew and got himself in trouble. His teammate said he left his room at the Cascadia Hotel around 10pm and when he awoke this morning he did not see him.
“When the team was about to leave the hotel this morning, Morton was not present and he did not contact the manager or anybody else. Around 11am when we were at the Oval, the manager of the hotel contacted us and said the police arrived at the hotel and informed him that Morton and Tonito Willett were charged for possession of marijuana and they wanted to search their rooms.
“The manager then contacted us and this is how we knew what happened.” Khan went on to explain that the police officers found marijuana on both Morton and Willett while conducting a road block exercise in Morvant.
Both Morton and Willett will take no further part in the match, as Khan and manager of the Leewards team Percy Daniel met with president of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) Azim Bassarath and it was decided that they will take no further part in the game.
Khan said after discussions with Bassarath it was decided that Morton is part of the T&T team and he was accomodated at the hotel and his actions meant he abandoned the team and as such, he is now on his own.
“We will provide counselling for him when he is ready but at this point in time he is by himself.
