The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Base Camp Ayanganna hosted 208 students from two Berbice schools as part of its policy to continue to build partnerships through civilian-military relations with government and non-governmental agencies.
In a press release the army said seven teachers including Headmaster Leroy King accompanied the Grade Six Cropper Primary School pupils and senior mistress Louralene Gouveia, six teachers and 16 parents accompanied the Number Eight Primary School students drawn from grades one to six to the army base on February 25 and on Thursday, respectively.
The eager pupils viewed video presentations which provided insights to various units of the force. They also visited the Dental Clinic at the Medical Corps and were treated to musical renditions by members of the Band Corps.
King said his school’s visit is part of its programme to expose pupils to some of the national institutions that they learn about, as they prepare for the National Grade Six Assessment. He said the visits allowed the students to gain a better idea about the various career opportunities they can pursue in the army.
Gouveia thanked the army for facilitating the visit; affording the students the opportunity to learn more about the Force. “This visit has been one in which the teachers and students have learned much. Indeed, by allowing us to visit you…have already begun moulding the minds of our youngsters in terms of possible career choices that they will have in the future.” Several of the students also sang a special “thank you song.”
According to the GDF the visits were facilitated by its policy geared at building and sustaining relationships with civil society through a structured programme and members of youth clubs, schools and other educational institutions are the beneficiaries.
