(BBC) The devastating tsunami in Japan has led to renewed questions as to whether something similar could occur in the Atlantic and put the Caribbean at risk.
Scientists say tsunamis occur far more frequently in the Pacific, where there is a large amount of seismic activity, than in the Atlantic.
Researchers of the Atlantic report evidence of at least 88 tsunamis in the Caribbean in the last 500 years.
The area’s last great tsunami was in 1946, and is believed to have killed 1,600 people on Hispaniola.
Some experts say governments have been slow to develop tsunami early warning systems.
A system for the Caribbean is not expected to be ready before 2014.
