Chavez Ageday and Stefon James put on a sensational run in the boys’ under 20 200 metres when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) held its National Youth and Junior Championships yesterday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
Despite the wet conditions of the track, Ageday copped the sprint double by outclassing his opponents in the under 20 boys’ 100 metres with a time of 11.1s.
He also made a late surge in the final 50 metres of the 200 metres turning in a time of 22.3 seconds against the inform James who had won the 400 metres earlier in the day in a time of 50.9s.
“It was a very sappy ground, not easy to run on but the game plan between me and my coach was to come out hard, run the turn then open up strides on the homestretch and it worked but it was a good race,” Ageday told Stabroek Sport of his 200-metre win.
“I just tried something new in the race off the turn which didn’t work for me, but I learnt from my mistake and I am looking forward for the next time we meet,” said James.
The emerging Keon Lynch made his impact on the sport when he defeated regular campaigner Cortez Fraser in the under 18 100 metres with a time of 11.3s. He returned in the 200 metres to place second behind Linden’s Marlon Moshette who won in a time of 23.2s. “The 100 felt nice but I think I could have turned in a faster time despite the conditions even though I didn’t train all week.” stated Lynch. After a bad start to her season last week in Linden, Carifta double gold medalist, Jevina Straker won the under 18 1500 metres race in a time of 5:16.68s with Adama Roberts and Beatrice David coming in second and third respectively while Nathaniel Giddings continued his dominance in the men’s 5000 metres race winning in a time of 17:41.9s. Malcolm Walcott out of Enmore Track Club, won a distance double winning the 800 and 1500 metres under 18 races. While no field events were done because of the state of the ground, President of the AAG, Colin Boyce said that because of the conditions of the ground he will not make any final judgments of the Carfta team until after the Inter Guiana’s Trials to be held next week. “In all fairness to the athletes because of the conditions I must give them another chance especially the field event athletes who haven’t competed,” said Boyce. The Inter Guiana games trials will kick off on March 20 at the Enmore Community Centre Ground.
