Chartered accountant and lawyer, Christopher Ram, was last Friday reelected president of the Guyana Tennis Association, formerly known as the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association, when the body held its annual general meeting.
Sam Barakat and Nigel Glasgow were elected vice-presidents; Ramesh Seebarran was returned as secretary and Anita Ramprasad-Shaw as treasurer.
Four committee members were also elected, namely Sandeep Chand, Duane Lopes, Joseph Rayappen, and Ezra Sue-Ho.
The meeting was attended by representatives from six clubs and the newly founded Guyana Tennis Coaches Association. The six clubs included the Corriverton Tennis Club, Park Players Club, the Georgetown Tennis Club, Roraima Tennis Club, Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club and the Dynamoes Tennis Club.
The meeting’s agenda opened with the president’s report during which Ram extended gratitude to all those who “stayed the course” during the reign of the previous executive.
Ram identified Barakt, Gilbert, Lopes, Grace McCalmon, Ramprasad-Shaw and Seebaran for their great sacrifice towards the sport and extended gratitude to all those who helped sponsor the sport over the years.
The president said that he was particularly proud of the body’s new constitution which was unanimously adopted in November of last year and came into effect in January of this year.
It was noted that many of the tournaments held last year generated a surplus and those monies were placed in the junior development fund, according to the association’s audited financial report.
It was also announced that the association wished to name Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel, Dr. Hazlewood and Mr. Naim Nasir of Bakewell’s Bakery as honorary members of the GLTA for the next two years. (Tamica Garnett)
