Ground conditions at the Guyana National Service ground on Carifesta Avenue yesterday forced several matches of the lucrative Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited (GT&T) 10/10 softball tournament to be postponed to today.
One of the organizers yesterday told Stabroek Sport yesterday that while a few matches were contested yesterday a number of other scheduled games w had to be postponed to today.
However, a few of the players yesterday griped about the playing conditions stating that the ground was unfit for play and that all the matches yesterday should have been called off.
Yesterday some sections of the outfield were covered with water especially two areas behind the stumps.
“Twelve other teams had to be rescheduled because their opponents didn’t show,” the official told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
Another team questioned why they were unable to gain a walk over after only a few members of the opposing team turned up.
“Our problem is that the team we were supposed to compete against turned up with three players and could not have competed when the match was called and instead of gaining a walkover the official wants to reschedule our match,” one player told Stabroek Sports.
“We made efforts to be here despite the weather with some guys coming from the West Coast,” the player added.
Questioned about the walkover rule issue, the official told this reporter “Don’t listen to everything people say.”
