Charles Ferguson, who is accused of stealing a cell phone and case belonging to a school girl, was on Monday admitted to bail in the sum of $75,000 by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation against Ferguson, of 108 D’ Andrade Street, Kitty, is that on January 5, at Georgetown, he stole a cell phone and case valued $76,500. The articles are the property of Shanella Small.
Ferguson denied the charge of simple larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, in presenting the prosecution’s case, said that on the day of the incident, Small entered a shop to make a purchase and forgot the cell phone, which was in its case, on the counter.
According to Harvey, the shop keeper said the accused was the only other person in the shop at the time. The sergeant said that after police conducted investigations, Ferguson was arrested and charged.
In his own defence, however, Ferguson pointed out to the court that many other persons frequent the shop and could have removed the items. He also questioned the validity of the shop keeper’s statement, while charging that it could have been the said shop owner who had removed the items.
Harvey had no objection to the man being placed on bail but requested that it be a substantial sum.
The accused is to return to court on April 11.
