Albion No.1 defeated Rollers of New Amsterdam in the final of the Volleyball ‘B’ competition organized by the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) last Sunday.
According to a press release, 10 teams participated in the tournament which had two groups in a round robin format with the Rollers coming out unbeaten in their group while Albion No. 1 emerged victorious in theirs.
In the closely fought final Albion No. 1 gained the slight advantage from the good play of their utility player, the burly Mukesh Kumar Umroa, winning the game with a 25-21 lead.
The tournament was witnessed by a sizeable crowd which included the donor of the first place trophy, Bennie Sukra, a former national player and proprietor of N&B Convenience Store in New Amsterdam.
The President of the BVA, Gregory Rambarran thanked the teams for participating and congratulated the winners and those who received incentives at a presentation ceremony held immediately after the tournament.
However, Rambarran also criticized the teams for not being properly attired with uniforms according to the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) rules. He noted also their need for more discipline and the fact that the team officials were not quite ready with their paperwork before the start of games.
He also reminded the teams of their obligations and urged the younger players to raise the level of their competition, the release noted.
Meanwhile Vice-President of the BVA, Levi Nedd echoed Rambarran’s comments and reminded everyone of upcoming events.
Refereeing Committee Chairman Errol Chase commented on the level of refereeing and the need for clubs to submit the names of at least three persons for a training course in refereeing.
Trophies and medals were presented by female spectators to the following promising young players- Randy Jaggernauth of Falcons and Abdul Lawrence of GTC –PM 2; Outstanding Spikier of the competition, Zade Quintyn of Rollers and Most Valuable Player, Mukesh Kumar Umrao of Albion No. 1.
The N&B Trophy for first place went to Albion No. 1 and the BVA trophy for second place went to Rollers.
The teams that participated in the competition were Albion No. 1, 2 & 3, Eaglets, Port Mourant Jaguars, Falcon of Canje and Rollers of New Amsterdam.
