Several of Guyana’s former cycling stars, including Olympians, came together last Saturday when the Guyana Cycling Association of North America held an innovative cycling reunion and fundraiser at the Woodbine Ballroom in Brooklyn, New York.
The association intends to work with the Guyana Cycling Federation in order to uplift cycling in Guyana,
co-ordinator of the association, Victor Rutherford, said in an e-mail to Stabroek Sport yesterday.
During the grand reunion a number of the former Guyanese cycling stars were presented with special plaques as a token of appreciation for their outstanding service to the cycling fraternity in serving their country well.
Plans are being formalized for other fundraising events, including a bar-b-que during the summer. Among those attending were several from Guyana’s ‘Hall of Cycling Fame’ such as Neville Hunte, Aubrey Gordon, Randolph Toussaint, Joelyn Joseph, Byron James, Victor Rutherford, Dennis Medford, Kenneth KJ Joseph, Monty Davis, Stanley Boyce, Charles Jennings, and Michael Rogers, among others.
Meanwhile, the association has expressed sincere gratitude to all who have supported this worthy venture, in particular Williams Caribbean Shipping.
The steering committee members who spearheaded the venture are Neville Hunte, Chairman; Hugh Pickering, Secretary; Gavin Lowman, Assistant Secretary/ Treasurer; Monty Davis, Treasurer; Victor Rutherford, Co-ordinator; and Linda London, Liaison Officer.
