Players from Georgetown and its environs are set to pay tribute to the late former junior national player Kevin Lawrence on March 26, when the Ravens Basketball Club hosts a one-night extravaganza in his memory at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The 28-year-old Lawrence died last March 27 at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after experiencing post-surgery complications following an operation he underwent the previous day.
Lawrence had sustained severe injuries to his back and neck after being involved in a car accident in Suriname and was a patient in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the time of his passing.
He was undoubtedly one the better shooters in the game locally and his club, Ravens, thought that it would be only fitting to pay homage to the player who had been highly instrumental in their several successes during his tenure at the club.
Dyna’s Embroidery, American Airlines and Hits and Jams Television (HJTV) are the sponsors of the event that will see Ravens Division Three taking on the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Elite while Ravens’ senior team will do battle against an All-Star side.
Players from as far as Linden are expected to be drafted into the mix with the Kevin Lawrence Memorial Trophy on the line along with cash incentives.
Club member and long time best friend of Lawrence, Sariah Clarke said: “This will be an annual event, but next year we might make it a four-team event and then let it grow from there, but this is just the start.”
The event will officially be launched on March 21.
Lawrence was buried on April 6, 2010 at the St. James-The-Less Anglican Church.
