The first scrabble tournament for the year is set to be staged next Monday when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) will host a Phagwah Open Tournament at Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC), beginning at 10AM. According to committee member, Colin Chichester, the tournament is expected to be over six rounds and if enough juniors register there will be a separate junior category. Chichester also said that it is expected that issues pertaining to the association’s selection of office bearers would be ironed out the same day following completion of the tournament.
At present the executive body of the association is without a president, vice-president, secretary or treasurer. The body currently has only the PRO Yvonne Murray, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Rudolph Michael, Organising Secretary Orlando Michael and three committee members, two of whom are Chichester and Julian Skeete.
The vacant positions were left open after no one sought to fill them when GASP held their Annual General Meeting, which included the selection of office bearers, two Sundays ago at the MSC.
According to reports, those nominated for the vacant positions indicated their reluctance to serve, while GASP President Moen Gafoor chose not to seek re-election.
Meanwhile, tournaments had been put on hold following the incomplete selection of office bearers but according to Chichester, the six selected members are acting as an interim committee and will carry out the functions until the situation is rectified.
According to Chichester, it is also expected that the body will be able to put together their calendar of events for this year following Monday’s meeting.
