Chandranie Gobin, the Mon Repos resident who was severely chopped by another villager, is currently recovering in the female ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is said to be in a stable condition.
When this newspaper visited her early yesterday, Gobin, 58, said that she was not feeling well. She had received five stitches to her head, where she was chopped.
Gobin and her relatives stated that the police have not given them an update as yet on whether they had made any attempts to arrest the suspect.
They noted that police were supposed to go to the hospital yesterday to take a statement from the injured woman. They were unable to do so, since Gobin was not being well enough to give a statement.
Gobin is eager for the police to look into the matter, but said “like dem slow in de matter.”
According to her son-in-law, the police had initially arrested the “back neighbour” with whom Gobin and her family have a land dispute but they released him after 72 hours. The woman indicated her suspicions that the same neighbour who was arrested is connected with her attack. According to her, the two men are friends and on the day before the attack she saw them standing in the street chatting. Gobin added that the neighbour had threatened her and she made several reports to the police but to no avail.
Gobin was attacked in front of her home by a cutlass wielding assailant on Thursday night while sitting with her granddaughter. To date, the police have taken a statement from the granddaughter, who said she knows the attacker.
The man, according to Gobin and her relatives, is said to be from “around the area.” He was pointed out to the police, but they have so far made no move to arrest him.
