A police officer was yesterday charged with taking a bribe from a man who wanted to forego prosecution on traffic charges.
Gansham Singh was granted bail in the sum of $50,000, after he denied the charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The charge stated that Singh on March 12, being an agent of the State, corruptly obtained from Cleon Gerard the sum of $3,000, as an inducement or reward for foregoing to prosecute him for two traffic offences.
Singh, of 103 National Walk, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge of corrupt transaction by agent, when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that “the facts were as charged.”
The defendant’s attorney made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail. The prosecution had no objection to the accused being granted bail but requested that it be in a substantial sum to ensure he returns to stand trial.
Singh’s matter was transferred to the Cove and John Magistrates’ Court for March 22.
