The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has said its plans for Culture Fest 2011 are advancing.
In a press release, the ERC said it, along with stakeholders in regions Two and Three, is putting the final arrangements in place for the hosting of the festival at the Anna Regina Multilateral School and the Uitvlugt Community Centre on April 3. The event will then be expanded to regions Four, Five, Six and Ten.
The ERC said the festival seeks to bring Guyanese cultures and religions together where all groups can feel welcome and take the opportunity to teach each other their way of life. Youths of the various communities are especially invited to attend. The ERC will be providing trophies and other prizes for winners of the various competitions.
Culture Fest is being held under the theme ‘Encouraging and creating respect for religious, cultural and other forms of diversity in a plural society.’ Celebrations will entail inter-village sports contests, impromptu speech competitions, exhibitions and cultural performances. Ethnic food and drinks will also be on sale. No alcohol will be allowed into the venues.
Groups and clubs interested in participating in the festival in regions Two and Three can contact their regional information offices. Interested persons can also contact the ERC’s Public Education and Awareness Unit at telephone numbers 231-6281, 231-6479 and 231-6265.
