The last 16 teams of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) 10/10 softball cricket tournament are still making their presence known at various venues around the country as the fourth week of the softball competition ended last weekend.
While rain ruined the matches in some areas last weekend, other communities were able to view some exciting games, according to a press release.
Leonard Donald of the Guyana Softball League spoke to Stabroek Sport via telephone of the effect the rain had on the tournament.
“Well, everybody would have wanted the best conditions but a lot of people have enjoyed the conditions because it provided thrills with close games.
“We have had some complaints about the conditions of various grounds but most have been from the losing teams and the winning teams have none and despite the weather a lot of people have turned out at venues and gained from GT&T’s promotions, we have also had maximum participation from teams and the tournament so far has been professional,” he added.
Meanwhile last year’s finalist, Crabwood Creek Unstoppables from the Central and Upper Corentyne Zone will go head-to-head with the Berbice Titans who have built a reputation on their hard ball exploits, while last year’s semi-finalist, Memorix XI will face the inform Celebrity Times who have trounced all their opponents by huge margins.
The Wolf Warriors, a team from last year’s super 16 stage from the West Coast Zone are making their way through the rounds but will face good competition from the likes of Invaders and Street Fighters 11 who pummelled their opposing teams into submission. The Wolf Warriors will clash with Invaders in the coming weekend for the West Side Championship while in the midst of things Alliance XI will face off against Street Fighters 11.
Linden also saw big names going through with teams like Hill Foot Strikers, South Star and last year’s Super 16 team Coomacka Mines making it through this round as they look to do battle for a spot in this year’s super 16 stage while the female equivalent of Coomacka Mines are showing their class through the rounds as they too pursue a spot in the super 16.
However in Georgetown due to the persistent rainfall and cancellation of a lot of matches, the big names in the city were unable to prove their superiority but will have their chance this coming weekend, while in the female category the teams are dead even and the team with the most endurance should make it to the top.
Teams such as Hot Shots, Well Women, Glamazons and 4R Lioness are still in the mix for the top spot, the release noted.
Cotton Field Oats of Essequibo in the male category and Hot Shots of Georgetown in the female category are last weekend’s big winners, winning by comfortable margins of 104 and 65 runs respectively while Troy Gonsalves of the Everest Team gave last weekend’s most notable performance with a stroke filled 76.
This coming weekend promises more excitement with the big teams going head to head for spots in the super sixteen stage that starts on March 26.
