Guyana’s top football club Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will spring into action tonight against BV Triumph in the first knockout out round of the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout tournament at the Georgetown Football Club Ground.
The Alpha United/BV Triumph battle gets underway at 8pm; prior to that Sunburst Camptown and Bakewell Buxton Stars lock horns in the curtain raiser from 6pm.
Alpha who had a bye to the second round of the CFU Club Championship will be looking to get as much football in as possible and also will be looking for a good start to the tournament in their pursuit of regaining the Mayor’s Cup title.
They have not been in the final since 2009 when they lost to Pele FC on penalty kicks in a thrilling final nor did they participate in 2010’s tournament. The squad features the likes of captain Howard Lowe, Dwain Jacobs, Shawn Bishop, Dwight Peters, Chris Camacho and Shavane Seafoth. On the other side of the boat the underdogs will be looking to make an impression against Alpha and take a bite out of their pie.Spearheading the opposition will be Colin Jones, Nickel Fraser, Kelvin Williams, Ronel Gordon and Malcom Wilson.
In the opening match up of the night, the technically correct Sunburst Camptown team which includes Nigel Codrington, Troy Prescott, Rishawn Sandiford, Orlando Gilgeous and custodian Oswald Cornette battles a youthful Buxton Stars. The East Coast squad includes Sherwin Griffith, Rawle Phillips, Allister Deene, Seon Thomas, Owen Bobb and Samuel Critchlow.
Meanwhile, tournament organizer Lennox Arthur said if the inclement weather continues overnight and keeps up during the day the double header is going to be postponed.
