Bandits broke into the dressing rooms at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Friday and made off with cricket items belonging to the Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica cricketers.
When the players turned up for the second day of their regional First Class match yesterday, they were greeted with ransacked dressing rooms. On closer observation, the players realised the bandits took their caps, clothes, cricket shades, gloves, pads, balls and the kit of the physiotherapist.
There was no security at the venue Friday night and this allowed the bandits to make the raid. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in the conditions for the hosting of matches has made it clear that security must be provided at the match venues, not only during the hours of play because cricketers normally don’t travel with all their belongings at the close of play.
When contacted yesterday, president of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) Azim Bassarath said he was alarmed at the news and was waiting for an official report from the management of the team. He said the TTCB would do all in its control to assist the team where necessary after this unfortunate situation.
For T&T cricketers Amit Jaggernauth and Imran Khan, this was the second time they have been robbed while at cricket. A couple of years ago, their cars were broken into at the National Cricket Centre.
Jaggernauth left the playing arena only to witness three bandits around his Nissan B-13 motor vehicle. He called out to the bandits who ran into a waiting car.
Jaggernauth then grabbed a bat and chased after the occupants of the vehicle along the road leading to the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Academy. The driver of the vehicle then struck him and he fell into a drain adjoining the road.
On closer inspection of his vehicle he noticed that his music system had been ripped out and his alarm destroyed.
Khan, while rushing out to see the commotion also noticed that the bandits had broken into his Nissan Primera. The music system was also taken away.
