Ganga leads T&T fight with patient half-century

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Captain Daren Ganga carved out a responsible, unbeaten half-century to lead a strong Trinidad and Tobago response on the second day of their sixth round Regional First Class Championship clash against Jamaica yesterday.

The right-handed Ganga, his side’s leading run-scorer this season, was unbeaten on a fine 75 at the close at Sabina Park as T&T reached 172 for three in reply to Jamaica’s 356 all out.

Resuming at their overnight 297 for five, Jamaica lost their last five wickets for 31 runs with Wavell Hinds extending his unbeaten 131 to 162 and Dave Bernard Jr. getting 70.

Seamer Rayad Emrit took three for 43 and leg-spinner Yannic Cariah, two for 68.
T&T lost Tishan Maraj early in the fray when he edged a drive to Simon Jackson at first slip of pacer Andrew Richardson (2-34) at 17 for four. However, Ganga and Lendl Simmons (56) then shared an 84-run stand for the second wicket to deny Jamaica any further success.

Ganga hit nine fours in an innings that has so far lasted 167 balls and 232 minutes while Simmons stroked five fours and a six off 111 balls.Pacer Jerome Taylor returned in the first over of his second spell to trap Simmons lbw at 101 for two but Jason Mohammed (13) batted over an hour with Ganga to add another 43 for the for the third wicket.

When Mohammed edged a cut behind off Richardson, Sherwin Ganga (11 not out) joined his older brother to carry T&T to the close without further loss.

Earlier, Hinds and Bernard extended their sixth wicket stand to 149 before Bernard perished, lbw to leg-spinner Imran Khan, sparking a slide which saw wickets tumble quickly.

Bernard, unbeaten on 55 overnight, struck five fours and two sixes off 144 balls in 171 minutes at the crease.

Hinds remained unbeaten, however, counting 12 fours and eight sixes in an innings requiring 266 balls and 356 minutes.
