The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has named five senior and six junior players to participate in an invitational triangular tournament next weekend in Suriname.
The players will be accompanied by two officials.
Chairman of the selection committee of the GTTA Dr Pradeep Balram told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the GTTA was acting on a request from the Suriname Table tennis Federation.
“The main idea of the tournament is that Suriname needs some assistance in getting their game organized,” he told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
According to Dr Balram, the players will be accompanied by Linden Johnson and Patrick Triumph who will serve as manager and assistant manager respectively.
The two will also double as coaches since Johnson is an International Table tennis Federation (ITTF) Level Two coach and Triumph an ITTF Level One coach.
Dr Balram said while all the details of the tour have not been fully worked out, he said the schedule involves coaching sessions on Friday and Saturday while there will be tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.
“They will decide on the format when the Guyana team gets there,” he added.
The programme will take place at the table tennis centre in Paramaribo.
The seniors identified are Edinho Lewis, Orin Hickerson, Joel Alleyne, Hewley Griffith and the promising Sherwin Sahadeo of Berbice.
The juniors will be led by national U-18 champion and will include Brandon Baldie, national U-15 champion Denzel Duff, national Under13 champion Jamaal Duff, Sunil Logan and Stefan Corlette.
National female player Natalie Cummings will accompany the team.
The team is expected to depart Guyana this Thursday and return on Monday.
