Three men armed with guns invaded a church at Castello Housing Scheme last evening robbing a man of jewellery and shooting the drummer in his leg before escaping.
Police have recovered one of the guns used by the men after one of the bandits was hit and dropped it. The church drummer, Brian Cummings of East Ruimveldt was shot in his right leg, just above the knee and was being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital last night.
Cummings’ nephew, Eon Bancroft told Stabroek News that there were about ten persons in the church located at 87 Castello Housing Scheme and they were about to leave when the bandits struck at 7:30pm. He said that the men wore kerchiefs covering their faces and all were armed with guns.
He said that one of the men stood guard outside while the two others went inside. The bandits approached a man identified only as ‘Brother Gregory’ and ordered him to take off his jewellery.
Bancroft said that the man wore several pieces of jewellery including chains and wrist bands but as he moved to comply with the bandits’ order, he took something and lashed one of the bandits. Bancroft said that the bandit fell and dropped his gun. “The other one who was waiting outside fire a bullet into the church and the bullet go straight to Brian foot”, he said.
The bullet lodged just above the right knee.
“He sey nobody doan…move”. After that, the bandits stripped Gregory of his jewellery and fled. The one whose gun had fallen did not pick it up. As the bandits took off, another shot was fired. Cummings was rushed to the hospital while the police were summoned and took possession of the gun, Bancroft said.
He said that he was told that Gregory normally attended the church. The bandits did not target anyone else. Police are continuing their investigations.
