Medical professionals who have not yet registered or renewed their licences with the Medical Council of Guyana could lose their jobs, according to Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Shamdeo Persaud is currently preparing a list of all physicians employed by the public sector and their registration status, Ramsammy said on Saturday last, adding that anyone who is not registered by the end of the month could be fired.
Ramsammy said persons in the public sector who have not renewed their licences will be terminated and will have to begin the registration and employment process, and the ministry will hand over the names of those in the private sector to the police.
“You would be practicing your profession illegally if you haven’t complied and it means the police will act,” he said.
The ministry will advise the public service to terminate their employment, he continued saying that medical professionals have been cautioned.
In accordance with the law, renewals of licence must be completed by the end of January.
The minister said professionals who have not yet registered with the council and or renewed their licence are practising illegally in the country.
“The ministry is calling the Medical Council to rigidly enforce the laws,” Ramsammy said.
He added that the ministry has given permission to the council for late registration and licensing, but there is a fee for late registration- this applies to physicians, dentists and pharmacists.
