CAVE HILL, Barbados, CMC – Another decisive spell from Carlos Brathwaite propelled Combined Campuses & Colleges to an eight-run victory over Guyana in the WICB Regional first-class championship yesterday.
The tall, beefy fast bowler collected five wickets for 28 runs from 14 overs, as the Guyanese, chasing 200 for victory, were dismissed for 191 in their second innings about seven minutes after tea on the final day of their sixth round match at the Three Ws Oval.
Brathwaite formalised the victory with successive lbw verdicts to dismiss tail-enders Brandon Bess and Ronsford Beaton in the first over after the break, as Guyana lost their last five wickets for 28 runs.
The result earned CCC 12 points and pushes them to 45 in the Championship, and Guyana gained no points and remained on 16.
Assad Fudadin hit the top score of 44 for the Guyanese, Derwin Christian and Vishaul Singh supported with 32 apiece, and Leon Johnson made 23.
Guyana started the day on 30 for one, and lost opener Richard Ramdeen caught at extra-cover off Kevin McClean for 16 in the third over of the day.
West Indies left-hander Narsingh Deonarine is still trying to work his way back, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an injury, and off-spinner Ryan Austin had him caught at gully for eight.
Johnson, who started the day on eight, was caught at second slip to give Brathwaite his first scalp with his second ball of the day.
But Christian joined Fudadin, and they put on 53 for the fifth wicket either side of taking Guyana to 121 for four at lunch.
Kavesh Kantasingh made the breakthrough for the CCC in the second over after the interval, when he trapped Christian lbw.
Further resistance came from the Guyanese in the form of a 41-run stand between Fudadin and Vishaul Singh.
They seemed destined to bat the visitors to tea, but Brathwaite, bowling from the Ramdin & Valentine (southern) End, pulled the choke, and trapped Fudadin lbw, and had Zaheer Mohammed brilliantly caught low to his right by wicketkeeper Jamal Smith for a duck before Singh was caught at silly point off Austin for 32, as the Guyanese slipped to 190 for eight at tea.
After the break, Brathwaite wasted no time dispatching Bess and Beaton to help him earn the Man-of-the-Match award for match figures of nine for 61 off 38.4 overs.
Austin finished with three for 75 off 29 overs to take his tally of wickets to a season-leading 29.
