Unheralded Anthony Drayton and the experienced Wendell Meusa were the winners of the junior and senior categories respectively as the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Topco Juices One-Day Rapid Chess Tournament sponsored by Topco Juices concluded yesterday at the Keishars Sports Club.
Drayton, out of the Georgetown Technical Institute edged out Ron Motilall, Saeed Ali and Joshua Pedro who were second, third and fourth respectively.
“The competition was tough but yet kind of easy with the juniors because only three seniors defeated me,” Drayton told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
Meanwhile, former national champion, Meusa place first while Shiv Nandalall, Irshad Mohamad, and Alexander Duncan were second third and fourth respectively.
“It was ok but let’s just say it was very surprising because the young players have
shown improvement by defeating seniors.
“Also it was a more enjoyable form of chess because of the speed at which it is played and the limited time you have to make decisions,” Meusa told Stabroek Sport.
