City contractor Alwyn Alexander fell off the roof of a building where he had gone to do some work and died yesterday.
Alexander, 50, had accompanied his brother, who was awarded the contract, to the Shell Service Station at Agricola, East Bank Demerara when tragedy struck. He is reported to have slipped on an object while on top of the building resulting in him crashing to the ground.
Alexander, who was popularly known as ‘Charlie’ of 122 Parade Street, Kingston died at the Georgetown Public Hospital a few hours after his fall. The accident occurred close to 4 pm and Alexander succumbed to his injuries at 7 pm.
Doctors told his relatives that Alexander sustained serious brain injuries and was bleeding internally as a result of the fall. He was said to have also fractured his neck. Bridgette Bayne, his reputed wife, told this newspaper that Alexander worked with his brother. She said they had gone to the station to do an estimate for a project they were working on when Alexander went up on top to do some measurements.
The distressed Bayne recalled that the news of his death paralysed her for a short while. She said they had lived for years as a couple and had two children.
