Twenty two secondary school students began a three-day workshop on football refereeing as phase two of the inaugural Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools Football Academy kicked off at the Ministry of Education Pavilion, Carifesta Avenue yesterday.
The programme is geared at preparing the students to officiate in upcoming matches of the Academy next month.
The participating schools are North Georgetown Secondary, St. Joseph’s High, Tutorial High, Queen’s College, Marian Academy, Tucville Secondary, East Ruimveldt Secondary, Christ Church, Lodge Secondary, New Campbellville Secondary and St. George’s Secondary.
The course instructors are FIFA accredited Lawrence “Sparrow” Griffith and Roy McArthur.
Griffith said that he was very pleased with the turnout of students at the opening session and added that participants are very keen to learn.
Griffith expressed gratitude to the main sponsors Scotia Bank and Pepsi and the Ministry of Education for supporting the programme.
He also noted that assistance was also received from US-based Guyana Sports Development Council, Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Guyana Football Referees Council and alumni associations of the some of the participating schools.
Nicholas Fraser, head of the Physical Education Department of the Ministry of Education, welcomed the participants.
The academy was launched just over a month ago with a coaching course for teachers being the first phase.
