A man was on Tuesday remanded to prison after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of unlawful wounding.
It is alleged that Albert Pierre of 11 Henry Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Diana Bowen on March 16. Pierre, a carpenter, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
In presenting the facts of the case, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the two are known to each other and on the day in question the virtual complainant (VC) was loading sand into her hard via the defendant’s passageway. This angered the defendant who then cuffed Bowen in her face and threw her onto the ground. He then stamped her about the body and made good his escape on a bicycle. The VC was not only hospitalized but she also lost her left eye.
Telford further made an application for the accused to be remanded and a date to be set for a report on the VC’s condition.
Pierre’s attorney stated that his client was assaulted, adding that the VC spat on the accused. Claims were also made that Bowen was not in the hospital. The lawyer asked that his client be granted reasonable bail on regular grounds.
Telford then informed that there was no medical certificate but the VC’s daughter, who was present at court, said her mother was indeed in the hospital.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry remanded Pierre and ordered a report on Bowen’s condition for March 24.
